Tips for Installing Solar Panels on Your RV Roof

Running an RV A/C on Solar Power

We chose to install a large solar system with the main purpose of being able to run our A/C on solar power, which we can do!

Most RV A/Cs using about 1,300 – 1,500 watts when running and can easily use more than 3,000 watts when starting up. That’s why it is also recommended to install an RV A/C easy start device to minimize the amount of power drawn when the A/C starts up.

Understanding that you will rarely see the full amount of watts that your solar panels are rated for coming in, that is why we wanted to have at least 2,500 watts of solar to be able to run one A/C and cover other power needs without draining our battery bank. When we have full sun, we can easily run our A/C using the solar power from our panels without draining our batteries.

However, since we only have a 300 ah battery bank, we cannot continue running our A/C when the sun goes down because our battery bank would drain pretty quickly.

Monocrystalline vs. Polycrystalline Solar Panels

Monocrystalline panels are made from a single crystal structure, typically of high-purity silicon. This manufacturing process results in a uniform black color and rounded edges. Monocrystalline panels are known for their higher efficiency, as the single crystal structure allows for better electron flow. They tend to perform well in low-light conditions and have a longer lifespan. However, monocrystalline panels are usually more expensive than polycrystalline panels due to their higher manufacturing costs.

On the other hand, polycrystalline panels are made by melting multiple fragments of silicon together, resulting in a characteristic blue color and a textured appearance. The manufacturing process for polycrystalline panels is simpler and less expensive, making them a more cost-effective option. Although they have slightly lower efficiency compared to monocrystalline panels, polycrystalline panels have improved over the years and can still provide excellent performance. They are a popular choice for RV owners on a budget or those with ample roof space where lower efficiency can be compensated by installing more panels.
